Chapter 5 - Miriam Starts Recording
Miriam Holt did not trust coincidences.
She reviewed Elena’s chart and found four unauthorized changes.
The planned cesarean recommendation had been marked “patient declined.”
A note describing Elena’s pelvic injury had been shortened.
The risk assessment had been downgraded.
And the consent form referenced a conversation that never occurred.
Miriam called Elena from a private phone.
“Someone is building a record to show you chose labor.”
“Can you see who?”
“The access credentials belong to Preston and Khloe.”
Elena closed her eyes.
“Save everything.”
“I already did.”
Miriam printed the original entries and placed them in a locked hospital evidence cabinet.
She also activated secure audio documentation on the delivery-room tablet.
Hospital policy allowed recording when staff believed a patient might be coerced or placed at risk by a physician.
Miriam hoped she would never need it.
Then Elena went into labor unexpectedly.
Preston insisted she be admitted under his team.
Elena requested another obstetrician.
The request was denied because Preston had already marked himself as her designated physician.
Khloe appeared in the room wearing navy scrubs.
She claimed she was there to observe.
Elena said, “I don’t consent to her presence.”
Preston replied, “She is part of my team.”
“I want her out.”
Khloe’s eyes filled instantly.
Preston looked at Elena with disgust.
“This is exactly what I meant.”
Miriam witnessed the exchange.
She placed the tablet against her hip and started recording.
During the first hour, Elena’s labor progressed slowly.
The epidural provided partial relief.
Then the monitor pattern changed.
The baby showed signs of distress.
Elena requested surgical delivery.
Preston refused.
“We continue.”
“The head is not descending.”
“You’re anxious.”
“I am reading the same monitor you are.”
Khloe stood near the medication cart.
Miriam noticed her hand enter a drawer.
“What are you doing?” the nurse asked.
“Preparing a flush.”
Miriam checked the label.
It appeared correct.
But Khloe turned her body away before setting the syringe beside the epidural line.
Miriam’s suspicion deepened.
She moved the tablet closer.
Then Preston ordered the epidural stopped.
Miriam understood.
This was not simply a disagreement between married doctors.
