Chapter 10 - What Preston Asked Khloe to Prepare
Preston’s email did not instruct Khloe to drug Elena.
It did reveal the beginning of the scheme.
Prepare documentation for Elena’s delivery. She is likely to become oppositional. Include authority for physician-directed pain management and behavioral intervention.
Elena read the sentence twice.
Behavioral intervention.
She was a patient in labor.
Her husband had described her as a problem to be managed.
The email continued.
I want everything signed before admission. Do not give her another opportunity to turn this into a public argument.
Preston had intended to limit Elena’s choices.
Khloe transformed that intention into something more dangerous.
The prosecution later described it as an invitation.
Preston created a system where Elena’s objections could be treated as instability.
Khloe used that system to conceal medication tampering.
When investigators confronted Preston with the email, he said he feared Elena would create a scene.
“Why?” Detective Lauren Hayes asked.
“She had become hostile toward Khloe.”
“Because Khloe made medication errors?”
“She exaggerated them.”
“Did you investigate?”
“I trusted my intern.”
“More than your wife?”
Preston looked away.
Detective Hayes placed photographs of the altered consent form in front of him.
“You signed a document taking away your wife’s control over her own pain medication.”
“I did not read the paragraph.”
“You asked for behavioral authority.”
“I meant standard physician discretion.”
“You wanted pain used to obtain cooperation.”
Preston’s silence became part of the record.
Then investigators showed him Khloe’s text messages.
She had written to a friend:
Once Elena breaks, Preston will finally see what she really is.
Another message read:
The delivery will fix everything.
Preston’s face collapsed.
He had believed Khloe was frightened.
In reality, she had been planning.
But his humiliation quickly turned into self-pity.
“She manipulated me.”
Detective Hayes replied, “She did. And you gave her access.”
Preston asked whether Gabriel was alive.
The detective refused to answer.
That information belonged to Elena.
For the first time, Preston experienced what he had imposed on his wife.
Powerlessness.
Outside the interview room, Khloe requested a lawyer.
She continued denying the injection.
Then police found a discarded adhesive label inside her locker.
It matched the syringe.
Beneath it was a photograph of Preston sleeping in a hotel bed.
