Chapter 13 - Gabriel Opens His Eyes

On the ninth day, Gabriel opened his eyes while Elena was speaking.
She had been telling him about the ocean.
About Charleston sunlight on the water.
About the blue room waiting at home.
His eyes moved toward her voice.
The nurse smiled.
“He knows you.”
Elena cried quietly.
Two days later, he breathed without mechanical support.
His feeding improved.
The neurologist reported that early signs were encouraging.
There could still be developmental concerns.
No one could promise the future.
But Gabriel was alive.
He was fighting.
And Elena could finally hold him.
Miriam helped place the baby against her chest.
Elena closed her eyes.
For several minutes, the hospital, investigation, and ruined marriage disappeared.
There was only warmth.
Breathing.
A tiny heartbeat against hers.
Preston requested permission to see him.
Elena refused.
Her attorney supported the decision while the criminal and custody investigations remained open.
Preston sent a letter.
Gabriel deserves to know I loved him before he was born.
Elena wrote one sentence in response.
Love without safety is not enough.
She did not send it.
She kept it for the custody hearing.
When Gabriel was discharged, photographers waited outside the hospital.
Elena left through a private entrance.
Miriam carried the medical bag.
Dr. Reyes walked them to the car.
Before Elena got inside, she turned toward Miriam.
“You saved us.”
Miriam shook her head.
“You told the truth. I listened.”
That sentence stayed with Elena.
The difference between Preston and Miriam was not medical knowledge.
Both were experienced.
Both saw the same monitor.
Only one respected the patient speaking from the bed.
Elena returned to the house she once shared with Preston.
His belongings had been removed under court supervision.
The nursery remained unfinished.
She sat in the rocking chair holding Gabriel.
On the wall, Preston had painted the words:
Our greatest miracle.
Elena covered them with a framed photograph of Gabriel’s hand gripping hers.
She did not want her son’s story defined by the father who endangered him.
She wanted it defined by survival.
Then her attorney called.
Khloe had offered a plea agreement.
In exchange, she would reveal exactly what Preston knew before the delivery.

Elena looked down at Gabriel.
“Tell the prosecutor to hear her.”
