Chapter 2 - The Husband Who Stopped Believing Me
Three months earlier, Preston had still called Elena the best doctor he knew.
They had met during residency.
He admired her calm under pressure.
She admired the way he could reassure terrified parents during complicated deliveries.
For years, they were the couple younger doctors wanted to become.
Then Khloe Mercer joined Preston’s department.
She was talented enough to appear promising and helpless enough to attract protection.
At first, Elena liked her.
Khloe brought coffee during long shifts.
She asked thoughtful questions.
She laughed too loudly at Preston’s jokes, but Elena ignored it.
Then the stories began.
Khloe told Preston that Elena corrected her in front of nurses.
That Elena deliberately gave her impossible cases.
That Elena resented any younger woman receiving praise.
None of it was true.
The first time Preston confronted his wife, he sounded concerned.
“Khloe says you embarrassed her during rounds.”
“She entered the wrong dosage.”
“You could have corrected her privately.”
“The medication had already been ordered.”
“She’s learning.”
“So is every intern. That doesn’t make the patient less important.”
Preston walked away angry.
A week later, he accused Elena of removing Khloe from a procedure.
Khloe had nearly contaminated a sterile field.
Again, Preston believed Khloe’s version.
Each disagreement created a new distance between husband and wife.
At home, Preston stopped discussing work.
He began taking calls outside.
He changed his phone password.
When Elena asked why, he said she had become suspicious and controlling.
Then she became pregnant.
For several months, the baby seemed to bring them closer.
Preston attended every scan.
He spoke to their son through Elena’s stomach.
He painted the nursery himself.
But as Elena’s pregnancy became more complicated, Khloe’s presence inside their marriage increased.
She texted Preston late at night.
She cried in his office.
She claimed Elena threatened to destroy her career.
One evening, Preston came home and said, “You need to leave her alone.”
Elena stared at him.
“I barely speak to her.”
“She’s afraid of you.”
“She made a medication error that could have hurt someone.”
“You always have an explanation.”
That sentence changed everything.
Preston no longer wanted facts.
He wanted a reason to defend Khloe.
And every time Elena challenged the intern’s behavior, Preston treated it as proof of jealousy.
Two weeks before labor, Elena discovered that someone had entered her electronic medical chart without authorization.
The access log showed Khloe’s credentials.
When Elena told Preston, he did not investigate.
He said Khloe had probably opened the wrong file.
Elena knew then that her husband had become dangerous.
