Chapter 9 - The Empty Bassinet

A neonatal doctor entered instead of the baby.
Elena’s heart stopped for one terrible second.
The doctor pulled a chair closer.
“Your son is alive.”
Elena covered her mouth.
“He needed breathing support.”
“Can I see him?”
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
“He experienced oxygen deprivation during delivery. We need to monitor him closely.”
Elena stared toward the empty bassinet.
“Will he recover?”
“It is too early to know.”
The answer cut deeper than certainty would have.
Elena asked about the drug.
Preliminary testing confirmed that the syringe contained oxytocin at several times the intended concentration.
The hospital’s electronic medication system showed no valid order for it.
Someone had entered a false order under Elena’s name.
Not Preston’s.
Elena looked at Miriam.
“She used my credentials.”
“We believe so.”
Khloe had accessed Elena’s chart months earlier.
She copied enough security information to imitate her digital signature.
That explained the unauthorized notes and the altered consent form.
But it did not excuse Preston.
He had signed the physician authorization.
He had dismissed medical warnings.
He had ordered the epidural stopped after saying pain would make Elena cooperate.
Hospital administrators suspended him immediately.
Police opened a criminal investigation.
Elena asked whether he had seen the baby.
“No.”
“Keep it that way.”
Miriam nodded.
Preston remained outside the neonatal intensive care unit for hours.
He sent messages.
I didn’t know about the drug.
Please let me explain.
I thought she was only documenting the plan.
I was angry.
I made a mistake.
Elena read none of them.
She asked Miriam to block his number on the hospital phone.
Later that evening, Dr. Reyes brought a photograph.
The baby lay inside an incubator with small monitoring leads attached.
His face was peaceful.
Elena touched the image with one finger.
“What is his prognosis?”
“We are seeing encouraging signs.”
Not a promise.
But enough for her to breathe.
She named him Gabriel.
Preston had wanted the name Carter after his father.
Elena chose Gabriel because it meant strength.
That night, as she lay recovering, a hospital attorney entered with another document.
“We found something in the electronic archive.”
The consent form had been created ten days before labor.
Before Elena’s final scan.
Before any medical need for a trial of labor had been established.

The file creator was Khloe.
But the original request had come from Preston’s private email.
