Chapter 4 - The Consent Form I Never Signed

At thirty-eight weeks, Elena arrived for a routine scan.
The baby measured larger than expected.
His shoulders were broad.
His head position remained high.
The consulting specialist recommended a scheduled cesarean delivery.
Preston dismissed the concern.
“Measurements are often wrong.”
The specialist looked at Elena.
“With your pelvic history, labor could become dangerous.”
Elena had fractured her pelvis in a car accident during medical school.
She recovered well, but the injury had narrowed one side of the birth canal.
Preston knew that.
He had reviewed the imaging years earlier.
Elena said, “I want the cesarean scheduled.”
Preston smiled in front of the specialist.
“We’ll discuss it at home.”
At home, he became angry.
“You embarrassed me.”
“I made a medical decision.”
“You overruled me in front of another doctor.”
“It is my body.”
“It is my child too.”
“That does not give you authority over my surgery.”
Preston paced the kitchen.
“You always assume the worst.”
“I understand the risk.”
“You understand emergency medicine. You are not an obstetrician.”
The cruelty was deliberate.
For seven years, he had praised her expertise.
Now he reduced her to silence her.
Two days later, a hospital administrator called to confirm Elena’s delivery plan.
The woman mentioned a signed consent form authorizing a trial of labor with conditional withdrawal of epidural medication if progress slowed.
Elena froze.
“I never signed that.”
The administrator hesitated.
“It carries your electronic consent and Dr. Pierce’s approval.”
“Send me a copy.”
Hospital policy prevented release without a formal request.
Elena filed one immediately.
Before the document arrived, Preston entered the bedroom holding a sealed envelope.
“Why are you requesting records?”
“Because someone filed a consent form in my name.”
He looked almost bored.
“You probably signed it during your appointment.”
“I did not.”
“Pregnancy affects memory.”
Elena stared at him.
The sentence was not spontaneous.
It sounded prepared.
She asked to see the envelope.
He refused.
“What is it?”
“Routine delivery paperwork.”
“Then show me.”
Preston placed it inside his locked briefcase.
That night, Elena waited until he slept.
She photographed the outside of the case but could not open it.
The following morning, Khloe appeared at their home carrying coffee and hospital forms.
She said Preston had forgotten them.
Elena watched her enter the study without asking.
Khloe knew exactly where the locked briefcase was kept.
May you like
She also knew the combination.
When she emerged, the sealed envelope was gone.
