Chapter 1 - The Day They Tried to Throw Me Out

“Mom gets the master bedroom.”
Blake’s voice carried across the balcony like a verdict.
I stood beside my eight-year-old daughter, Emma, overlooking the bright Pacific Ocean. Her small hand tightened around mine as Patricia Carrington stepped out of Blake’s SUV with two expensive suitcases.
Patricia entered our home without knocking.
“The couch will be perfect for you,” she said, smiling as though she had rehearsed the insult. “Emma can use an air mattress.”
Emma looked at her father.
“But that’s Mommy’s room.”
“Adults are talking,” Blake snapped.
Emma’s face fell.
That hurt more than Patricia’s cruelty.
Blake went upstairs, opened our bedroom closet, and began throwing my belongings into the hallway. Shoes, dresses, family photographs, and a framed picture of my late father struck the hardwood floor.
The glass over Dad’s face shattered.
“Don’t make this difficult,” Blake said.
Patricia folded her arms. “She should be grateful we’re letting her stay.”
I bent down and lifted my father’s photograph. Behind the cracked glass, his calm eyes reminded me of the promise I had made beside his hospital bed.
Never let anyone take what I protected for you.
I opened the leather folder I had quietly carried all afternoon.
Inside was a document Blake had never seen.
“Are you finished?” I asked.
He smirked. “I’ve just started.”
I signed the document, called my attorney, and said five words.
“Activate the ownership clause now.”

Blake’s smile disappeared.
👉 What Blake did not know was that forcing Claire from the bedroom triggered a legal protection her father had designed years earlier.
