Chapter 20 - The Price of His Confession
Blake did not ask me to protect him.
“I deserve whatever happens,” he said.
“That doesn’t restore Emma’s trust.”
“I know.”
He signed over every remaining asset in Carrington Development to a court-appointed receiver. He also agreed to repay the trust through future earnings.
His confession gave prosecutors enough evidence to add attempted murder conspiracy charges against Malcolm and Patricia.
But it also exposed Blake completely.
He faced fraud, forgery, conspiracy, and attempted custodial interference.
“You could go to prison,” I said.
“I should.”
For years, Blake had confused confidence with character. Now, stripped of his company, his mother’s influence, and his lies, he finally looked like a man forced to see himself clearly.
He asked only one favor.
“Tell Emma I love her.”
“You can tell her when professionals decide it is safe.”
He nodded.
I left without touching him.
Outside, Daniel informed me that Morrow Capital’s accounts had been frozen. Investigators recovered millions tied to my father’s stolen funds.
Dawson Marine Systems issued a statement removing Thomas Bell and suspending all fiduciary board activity.
For the first time, we had the advantage.
Then a local news station aired leaked footage of the night attack.
The clip showed only Blake injured on the floor and me holding the shredded amendment.
The headline suggested I had destroyed evidence during a violent marital dispute.
Malcolm’s attorneys were shaping public opinion.
Online strangers called me greedy, unstable, and manipulative.
Patricia appeared in a recorded interview from jail.
“My daughter-in-law always wanted to destroy my son.”
Emma saw part of the broadcast before Rosa turned it off.
She asked, “Why is Grandma lying?”
I knelt beside her.
“Because the truth is finally catching up to her.”
Then my phone rang.
The caller was the state attorney general.
