Chapter 11 - The Evidence My Father Buried
The drive was encrypted.
Daniel entered a code based on my father’s old company registration number.
It failed.
We tried my birthday.
It failed again.
Then Emma, sitting quietly at the edge of the desk, pointed to the label.
“Grandpa always called Mom ‘Sea Glass.’”
Daniel looked at me.
It was true.
Dad said sea glass survived being broken, sharpened, and thrown against rocks until time made it beautiful.
We entered SEAGLASS.
The drive opened.
Folders appeared containing bank records, contracts, internal emails, and video testimony recorded by my father.
His face filled the screen.
He looked older than I remembered, tired but steady.
“Claire, if you are watching this, Malcolm Crane has found a way back into your life.”
My breath caught.
Dad explained that Malcolm had created false vendors and diverted $18 million from Dawson Marine Systems. When confronted, Malcolm threatened employees, investors, and my family.
Dad had recovered most of the money quietly.
But one account remained active.
The beneficiary was Morrow Capital Partners.
Malcolm had used stolen money to build the company now financing Blake.
“He has been waiting,” Dad said, “for access to the voting shares held in your trust.”
Daniel paused the video.
“Blake’s debt was leverage. Your marriage was the entry point.”
I felt physically sick.
Had Blake met me because of Malcolm?
The video continued.
Dad stated that the sealed beneficiary amendment transferred temporary voting authority only if I voluntarily signed before two independent witnesses.
Without my signature, Malcolm could never control the company.
That was why they needed to break me, isolate me, discredit me, and make me sign.
Then Dad revealed one final fact.
Years earlier, he had secretly transferred a minority share package to a backup beneficiary.
The name was not on the recording.
