Chapter 3 - The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

Blake reached for my phone.

I stepped back before he could take it.

“There’s no loan,” he said. “Daniel is trying to scare you.”

Daniel sent a secure file to my email.

I opened it.

A mortgage application for $2.4 million appeared on the screen. The property description matched our oceanfront home. The borrower’s authorization page carried my full name.

And my signature.

Except I had never signed it.

Emma watched my face change.

“Mom, what’s wrong?”

I locked the screen and crouched beside her.

“Nothing you need to worry about, sweetheart.”

Blake paced toward the windows.

“It was only paperwork.”

“Paperwork with a forged signature?”

Patricia stepped between us.

“My son needed capital for his company. A wife supports her husband.”

“A wife is not collateral,” I said.

Blake lowered his voice. “The bank hadn’t approved anything yet.”

Daniel interrupted.

“That is not accurate. Preliminary approval was issued this morning.”

My stomach turned.

If Blake had succeeded, the home my father had protected would have secured Blake’s failing business debts.

“You told me Carrington Development was profitable.”

“It will be.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

His jaw tightened.

Patricia pointed at me.

“You’ve lived in luxury because of Blake.”

I almost laughed.

Every mortgage-free month, every renovation, every school payment, and every emergency had come from the Dawson trust. Blake had built his image using my inheritance while convincing me his company supported us.

Daniel sent another file.

Bank statements.

For eighteen months, money had been leaving the trust-linked household account in small, carefully disguised transfers.

The destination account belonged to Carrington Development.

Blake stared at the screen.

Then he looked toward the office.

I followed his eyes.

The trust’s original document box was stored inside that room.

And suddenly Blake ran for the door.

👉 Blake’s first instinct was not to explain the forged signature—it was to destroy whatever evidence remained inside Claire’s office.
