Chapter 23 - The Land Bought With Emma’s Money

The waterfront parcel sat twelve miles south of our home.

Blake had purchased it through a shell company named EC Holdings.

Emma’s initials.

He had used $480,000 taken from the education account my father created for her.

At the hospital, I placed the deed in front of him.

“What is this?”

He stared at it for a long time.

Then he began to cry.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just quietly, like a man with nothing left to hide behind.

“I planned to build a resort.”

“With our daughter’s money.”

“I thought I could double it before anyone noticed.”

“You gambled with her future.”

“Yes.”

That single word ended the last part of me still searching for a softer explanation.

Blake signed the property back to Emma’s trust.

The court later ordered it sold, but Emma surprised me.

“Can we keep it?”

“For what?”

“A place where kids can go when their families are having bad days.”

She had spent weeks meeting counselors, advocates, and police officers. Instead of becoming bitter, she had noticed other frightened children.

With court approval, we transferred the parcel into a charitable foundation.

It would become the Sea Glass Center, offering temporary housing, counseling, and legal support for parents and children escaping financial and emotional abuse.

Blake asked to donate his future consulting income.

I accepted only after the court structured it as restitution, not redemption.

He could contribute.

He could not buy forgiveness.

Construction plans began.

For the first time since the nightmare started, Emma talked excitedly about the future.

Then Patricia’s attorney filed a motion claiming she was mentally incompetent during the conspiracy.

If accepted, she could avoid trial and possibly return to supervised family contact.

Emma overheard.

“Does that mean Grandma can come back?”

I looked at Daniel.

He shook his head.

“Not if we prove she planned this clearly.”

The strongest proof was hidden inside Patricia’s own private journal.

But the journal had vanished from police evidence.

👉 Patricia’s final chance to escape justice depended on a missing journal that documented every step of her plan.
