Chapter 13 - The Mistress at the Gate

Marissa arrived just after midnight.

She was younger than I expected, elegant, exhausted, and terrified.

Security stopped her at the gate.

She held the red portfolio above her head.

“I need to speak to Claire.”

Daniel advised me to keep her outside until police arrived.

Marissa looked directly at the camera.

“Malcolm knows about Emma.”

I opened the gate.

She entered alone.

Up close, I saw bruising around her wrist.

“I’m not asking for forgiveness,” she said. “I knew Blake was married.”

“Then start with the truth.”

She placed the portfolio on the table.

Inside was the original beneficiary amendment.

She had not destroyed it.

She had also brought emails, payment records, and recordings proving Malcolm had recruited her to manipulate Blake.

“Why turn against him now?”

“Because he ordered me to arrange an accident.”

My stomach tightened.

“For Blake?”

She shook her head.

“For you.”

Malcolm planned to make my death appear like a fall from the balcony after an emotional confrontation. Blake would be blamed. Patricia’s recordings and the false custody documents would establish a history of instability and marital violence.

With me dead and Blake imprisoned, Malcolm believed Emma’s guardianship could be controlled through Patricia.

“Why involve Emma?”

“Because she becomes the beneficiary.”

Daniel opened the amendment.

The backup voting beneficiary was not a stranger.

It was Emma.

My father had placed the future of Dawson Marine Systems in my daughter’s name, protected by an independent fiduciary board until adulthood.

Malcolm could not control the shares through me.

So he had redesigned the plan around my child.

Before police arrived, every light in the house went out.

The emergency generator failed.

From the darkness outside came the sound of breaking glass.

👉 Malcolm’s final plan had already begun, and Claire’s daughter was the true target hidden behind every betrayal.
