Chapter 10 - The Man in the Garage
Security sealed the house while the deputy rushed back.
Malcolm emerged from the garage before officers arrived.
He carried nothing.
“Claire,” he said warmly, as if we were meeting at a charity dinner. “You look so much like your father.”
“Stay away from me.”
He raised both hands.
“I came because Patricia’s attorney requested help identifying corporate records.”
“That attorney had no authority to bring you here.”
His smile never moved.
“You always were cautious.”
“No. I trusted the wrong people.”
For the first time, his eyes hardened.
He glanced toward Emma, who stood behind Rosa inside the locked house.
“Your father feared you would let emotion control the trust.”
“My father protected me from men like you.”
Malcolm stepped closer.
“He protected an asset he did not fully understand.”
The deputy’s vehicle entered the driveway.
Malcolm calmly handed over his identification and claimed he had entered by mistake. Without proof he had taken anything, the deputy could only issue a trespass warning.
Before leaving, Malcolm whispered, “Ask Daniel what your father did in 2009.”
Daniel heard him.
His face went pale.
Inside, I confronted him.
“What happened in 2009?”
Daniel closed the office door.
“Your father discovered Malcolm had diverted company funds through shell corporations. He forced Malcolm out privately to avoid destroying the company.”
“Why wasn’t he prosecuted?”
“Malcolm threatened to expose a safety defect in an early marine stabilization system. Your father believed public panic could bankrupt thousands of employees.”
“So he paid him to leave.”
“He bought his shares and secured confidentiality.”
“And Malcolm came back through Blake.”
Daniel nodded.
Then he opened the recovered trust case and removed a false bottom.
Inside was a flash drive my father had hidden separately from every listed document.
