Chapter 22 - Everett’s Last Lie
Everett did not resist arrest.
He looked at me and said, “Your father knew.”
The federal prosecutor explained that Everett had helped Malcolm create the first shell company in 2009. Later, Malcolm betrayed him and kept most of the money.
Everett disappeared not because my father exiled him unfairly, but because he had avoided prosecution by becoming a confidential source.
He had returned now hoping to recover the remaining funds before Malcolm exposed him.
The ledgers he gave me were real.
But they were incomplete.
One missing page identified an offshore account containing $6.8 million.
Money stolen from Dawson Marine Systems.
Everett had controlled it for seventeen years.
“You let me believe Dad hated you,” I said.
“He did hate what I became.”
“You let him die carrying your shame.”
His eyes lowered.
“I was afraid.”
Fear had become the excuse every person in this conspiracy used.
Blake feared failure.
Patricia feared insignificance.
Marissa feared Malcolm.
Everett feared prison.
And all of them decided I should pay for their fear.
Everett agreed to surrender the offshore account and testify against Malcolm.
The recovered money would repay employees, investors, and the trust.
As agents led him away, he stopped.
“Your father didn’t tell you I was alive because he hoped I would someday choose to come back honestly.”
“You didn’t.”
“No.”
For the first time, he did not defend himself.
That evening, I returned home to Emma.
She had placed my father’s cracked photograph in a new frame.
“I kept the broken glass,” she said. “Because Grandpa still looks the same.”
I hugged her.
The house felt quieter.
Safer.
Then Daniel delivered the final forensic report on Carrington Development.
Blake’s company had one hidden asset remaining.
