Chapter 14 - The Night the House Went Dark

Security moved us into the reinforced office.
Rosa carried Emma while Daniel locked the steel door.
Marissa whispered, “He has someone inside.”
The generator had been serviced that week by a contractor recommended by Blake.
Another piece of Malcolm’s preparation.
Through the office monitor, we watched grainy backup-camera footage.
A masked man crossed the kitchen.
A second figure entered through the garage.
They were not looking for valuables.
They moved directly toward Emma’s bedroom and the office.
The senior security officer confronted one intruder in the hallway. The camera shook during the struggle, then went black.
Emma buried her face against me.
I held her tightly.
“Listen to my voice,” I whispered. “You are safe with me.”
A heavy object struck the office door.
Once.
Twice.
Daniel activated a silent alarm connected directly to the county sheriff.
Marissa pulled a small drive from her necklace.
“This contains Malcolm’s original instructions.”
“Why didn’t you give it to police before?”
“Because it also proves I committed crimes.”
She was finally choosing between saving herself and saving Emma.
The door bent inward.
Then Blake’s voice came from the hallway.
“Claire! Open the door!”
I froze.
He sounded desperate.
“I followed them here,” he shouted. “Malcolm’s men are inside.”
Daniel checked the side camera.
Blake stood alone, bleeding from his forehead.
Behind him, one masked intruder raised a metal bar.
Blake turned and tackled him before the weapon came down.
The struggle moved out of view.
A gunshot cracked through the house.
Emma screamed.
Then silence.
The office monitor flickered back on.
Blake lay motionless on the hallway floor.

And Malcolm Crane stepped over him.
👉 Malcolm had stopped hiding behind other people, and now he stood only one locked door away from Claire and Emma.
