Chapter 5 - Patricia’s Hidden Plan
Patricia denied everything.
“That video is blurry.”
“It shows your face,” I said.
“It shows a woman carrying a box.”
“It also shows the bracelet Emma gave you for Christmas.”
Patricia covered her wrist.
Blake stepped forward.
“Leave my mother out of this.”
“You brought her into my home to help you remove me.”
His silence answered for him.
Emma stood near the balcony doors, trembling.
I wanted to keep questioning them, but not in front of her.
I asked the housekeeper, Rosa, to take Emma into the garden. Emma refused to release my hand.
“Are they taking our house?”
“No,” I promised. “Nobody is taking it.”
When Emma finally went with Rosa, I turned back to Patricia.
“Where is the box?”
“I threw it away.”
Blake’s head snapped toward her.
That reaction was enough.
“You didn’t know she took it,” I said.
He looked away.
Their alliance was already cracking.
Daniel instructed the officers to preserve all security footage. He also contacted the county sheriff because the missing case contained legal originals and private financial records.
Patricia became pale.
“You called the police over family papers?”
“You stole them.”
She walked toward the front door, but an officer stopped her.
A sheriff’s deputy arrived twenty minutes later and asked Patricia to open her SUV.
She refused.
The deputy obtained my consent as property owner to inspect the vehicle parked inside my gated property.
The black case was not in the trunk.
But beneath the passenger seat, he found a receipt from a private storage facility in Port Townsend.
The rental had been paid in cash that morning.
The unit was registered under a false name.
However, the emergency contact number belonged to Blake.
He stared at the receipt.
Patricia stared at him.
