Chapter 2 - The Clause He Never Read
My attorney, Daniel Reeves, answered immediately.
“Claire, are you safe?”
“For now.”
“Is Emma with you?”
“Yes.”
“Then do not leave the property.”
Blake laughed loudly enough for Daniel to hear.
“Tell your lawyer this is a family matter.”
Daniel’s voice sharpened through the speaker.
“Mr. Carrington, this is now a property enforcement matter.”
Patricia rolled her eyes. “What nonsense is she pulling?”
The front gate opened.
Two uniformed private security officers entered and approached the house. Blake marched toward them, certain they had come to remove me.
He pointed at my boxes.
“Good. Take those outside.”
The senior officer checked his tablet.
“We have instructions to remove unauthorized occupants and their belongings.”
Blake smiled at me.
Then the officer turned toward Patricia’s suitcases.
“These first.”
Patricia’s mouth dropped open.
“You can’t touch my property!”
“This residence is held by Dawson Coastal Trust,” the officer replied. “Ms. Claire Dawson is the sole authorized beneficiary and current residential controller.”
Blake went still.
I had never seen arrogance drain from a man’s face so quickly.
“That’s impossible,” he whispered. “The house was our wedding gift.”
“It was Claire’s protected inheritance,” Daniel said through the phone. “You were granted conditional occupancy through marriage.”
Blake looked at me as though I had become a stranger.
“You lied to me.”
“No,” I said quietly. “You never asked whose name was on the deed.”
Patricia grabbed her suitcase handle.
“My son paid for renovations.”
Daniel replied, “With funds transferred from Claire’s trust account.”
Blake’s face reddened.
Then Daniel added the sentence that changed everything.
“There is also the matter of the unauthorized loan application filed against this property yesterday.”
I stared at Blake.

👉 Claire had expected cruelty, but she had not expected to learn that Blake had secretly tried to borrow millions against her home.
