Chapter 25 - The Trial of Patricia Carrington

Patricia’s trial lasted eleven days.

Her attorney blamed Malcolm.

Then Blake.

Then me.

But every witness returned the responsibility to Patricia.

The housekeeper testified that Patricia searched my office repeatedly.

The bank officer explained how she presented forged authorizations.

Marissa described Patricia selecting photographs to use in the false custody case.

Blake testified against his own mother.

When he entered the courtroom, Patricia smiled as though he had come to save her.

Instead, he said, “My mother taught me that love meant obedience. I used that excuse to hurt my wife and daughter.”

Patricia’s smile vanished.

“You ungrateful coward,” she whispered.

The prosecutor asked Blake who ordered him to throw my belongings into the hallway.

“My mother.”

“And who chose the day?”

“She did. Malcolm’s deadline was approaching.”

The defense called Patricia to testify.

She cried softly and described herself as a mother protecting a struggling son.

Then the prosecutor displayed her journal entry planning to use Emma’s fear as leverage.

Patricia stopped crying.

Her voice became sharp.

“Children recover.”

The jury heard her clearly.

So did Emma, who watched only that segment later with her therapist’s guidance.

The verdict came after four hours.

Guilty on conspiracy.

Guilty on attempted fraud.

Guilty on evidence tampering.

Guilty on custodial interference.

Guilty on conspiracy connected to attempted murder.

Patricia finally looked afraid.

The judge sentenced her to twenty-two years.

As deputies approached, she turned toward Blake.

“You did this to me.”

He shook his head.

“No, Mom. You did.”

Patricia was led away shouting his name.

Outside, Emma asked whether Grandma would ever apologize.

“Maybe,” I said. “But healing cannot wait for someone else to become sorry.”

The next trial would be Malcolm’s.

And his attorneys had just offered me a deal.

If I refused to testify, Malcolm would plead guilty and accept twenty years.

If I testified, he might face life—but Emma would have to relive everything publicly.

👉 Claire now had to choose between guaranteed punishment and the harder fight for complete justice.
