Chapter 1 - The Push Everyone Applauded

“Nobody even wanted to come with you!”
Richard Vale drove his open palm into his daughter’s shoulder.
The shove was not accidental.
He planted his polished shoe against the grass, leaned his full weight forward, and sent Evelyn stumbling backward toward the marble fountain.
Her broken heel slid across the wet stone.
Her arms flew outward.
For one desperate second, she tried to catch the rim.
Then she crashed into the water.
The splash soaked the nearest wedding guests and sent champagne glasses jerking into the air.
Evelyn disappeared beneath the surface.
Laughter exploded across the lawn.
Her sister Penelope threw her head back in her white lace wedding gown and applauded from her gold chair.
Richard stepped away from the spray, laughing as though he had just performed a party trick.
Their mother, Margaret, looked down at her lap.
She did not laugh.
But she did not move either.
Evelyn surfaced, gasping.
Her champagne-beige silk suit had darkened completely. Wet fabric clung to her arms and legs. Brown hair covered her face.
She gripped the carved stone edge and forced herself upright.
Her father raised his glass.
“Maybe the fountain will wash off that desperate look.”
More guests laughed.
Evelyn climbed out without asking for help.
Water streamed from her sleeves.
One nude heel had snapped. The other scraped against the stone as she stood before nearly two hundred people.
A tall man she barely knew stepped from the crowd and steadied her upper arm.
Richard immediately pointed toward the estate gate.
“Throw her out.”
Two security guards approached.
One reached toward Evelyn.
Before his fingers touched her wet sleeve, the roar of engines rolled across the lawn.
Three black armored SUVs stopped outside the garden entrance.
The center door opened.
A tall man in a charcoal-gray suit stepped out and walked through the gate with a black cashmere coat over one arm.
Every important person at the wedding recognized him.
Blake Campbell.
The billionaire who had ignored their invitations for years.
Richard rushed forward and offered his hand.
Blake redirected it without breaking stride.
He walked straight to Evelyn, wrapped the coat around her soaked shoulders, and kissed her forehead.
Their matching wedding rings flashed in the sunlight.
Then Blake turned toward the silent crowd.
