Chapter 2 - The Daughter Who Never Fit the Picture

Evelyn Vale had spent most of her life standing just outside her family’s photographs.
Penelope belonged in the center.
She was polished, charming, and willing to become whatever their father needed her to be.
Evelyn asked questions.
That had always been her crime.
Richard Vale built his reputation as one of Miami’s most successful luxury developers. His face appeared in magazines. His name glittered on charity walls.
At home, he ruled through comparison.
“Penelope knows how to represent this family.”
“Penelope understands loyalty.”
“Why can’t you be more like your sister?”
Evelyn stopped trying before she turned twenty.
She studied urban planning instead of joining Richard’s company.
She worked with neighborhood groups fighting illegal evictions.
She refused the expensive condo her father offered because it came with conditions.
Every refusal humiliated Richard.
Every independent choice became evidence that Evelyn was “ungrateful.”
Penelope learned to weaponize that resentment.
She borrowed Evelyn’s clothes, then mocked her taste.
She dated Evelyn’s college boyfriend after convincing him Evelyn had cheated.
She privately apologized whenever Richard went too far, then repeated Evelyn’s secrets at dinner.
Margaret watched everything.
Sometimes she comforted Evelyn afterward.
But she never challenged Richard in front of others.
“Your father has a temper,” she would whisper.
“He has power because everyone keeps excusing him,” Evelyn once replied.
That ended their closeness.
Years later, when Penelope announced her wedding to Jonathan Mercer, the son of a politically connected hotel family, Richard treated it like a corporate merger.
The Vale name would join the Mercer name.
Every wealthy family in South Florida would attend.
Evelyn received her invitation through an assistant.
No personal note.
No phone call.
At the bottom, one sentence had been added in Penelope’s handwriting:
Please don’t create drama by bringing one of your activist friends.
Evelyn almost refused to go.
Then Margaret called.
“Please come,” she whispered. “Your sister will only marry once.”
Evelyn looked at the simple platinum ring on her left hand.
Blake had asked her to keep their marriage private for six months.
Not because he was ashamed.
Because someone had been quietly targeting her.

And Blake was trying to discover who.
👉 Evelyn attended the wedding alone to protect Blake’s investigation, never realizing the danger had begun inside her own family.
