Chapter 7 - The Marriage Built on Forged Signatures
Blake did not take Evelyn to a hotel.
He took her and Margaret to a private residence on Biscayne Bay that no reporter knew he owned.
A doctor examined Evelyn’s shoulder.
Nothing was broken, but the joint was badly bruised.
Her ankle was swollen from the broken heel.
While Evelyn changed into dry clothes, Margaret sat in the library clutching a cup of tea she never drank.
Blake’s attorney, Celia Grant, arrived within an hour.
Margaret stared at the legal pad in front of her.
“I signed whatever Richard gave me.”
Celia’s voice was gentle.
“Did you read the documents?”
“He never gave me time.”
“Did anyone witness your signatures?”
“Usually his accountant.”
“Did you receive independent legal advice?”
Margaret shook her head.
Blake entered carrying a sealed garment bag.
Inside was Evelyn’s wet suit.
Daniel had preserved it, along with the broken heel and witness videos.
Margaret looked at Blake as though seeing him for the first time.
“You really married her?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
Evelyn stood in the doorway.
“Because Dad was trying to get close to Blake’s company.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
Richard had spent months demanding introductions to unnamed investors.
She remembered hearing him shout about Campbell contracts behind his office door.
“What exactly did Richard sign in your name?” Blake asked.
Margaret hesitated.
“He created a company called Vale Coastal Holdings.”
Blake’s expression changed.
That name appeared in the leaks his investigators had tracked.
Margaret continued.
“Richard said it was for tax planning. I was listed as the owner because he claimed regulators were watching him.”
“Did you receive money?”
“No.”
“Did the company purchase property?”
“I don’t know.”
Blake opened his laptop.
Vale Coastal Holdings had purchased distressed apartment buildings across Miami through shell companies.
Those buildings were then emptied using fraudulent notices.
Several had been resold to investors connected to Richard.
One property stood out.
It sat beside land Blake planned to acquire for a major transit project.
Someone had used confidential information from Campbell Global to buy it first.
Richard had not merely wanted access to Blake.
