Chapter 3 - The Husband No One Knew Existed

Evelyn met Blake Campbell eleven months before the wedding.
Not at a gala.
Not on a yacht.
Not through her father.
They met inside a neighborhood community center with a leaking roof.
Blake had arrived without security, wearing jeans and a plain blue shirt. He introduced himself only as Blake, a private investor interested in preserving affordable housing.
Evelyn distrusted him immediately.
“Investors don’t preserve neighborhoods,” she said. “They rename them.”
Instead of becoming offended, Blake smiled.
“Then show me what I’m missing.”
She did.
For three hours, Evelyn walked him through blocks threatened by speculative development.
She showed him elderly tenants facing fake code violations.
She explained how shell companies purchased buildings, neglected them, then forced residents out.
Blake listened.
A week later, he funded every necessary repair through an independent nonprofit and refused public credit.
That was when Evelyn looked him up.
Blake Campbell was not merely wealthy.
He controlled a private infrastructure and investment group with interests stretching across ports, hotels, construction, security technology, and commercial real estate.
His fortune was discussed in whispers because he avoided interviews and public events.
Richard had tried for years to secure a meeting with him.
Blake had declined every invitation.
Evelyn nearly ended their relationship after learning his identity.
“You let me lecture you for three hours.”
“You were right for all three.”
“You should’ve told me.”
“I wanted you to meet me before you met the number attached to my name.”
They married quietly eight months later in a small courthouse north of Miami.
Only Blake’s attorney and Evelyn’s closest friend witnessed it.
They planned a private celebration once Blake completed a sensitive corporate investigation.
Someone had been leaking information about his acquisitions.
Strangely, several leaked deals benefited companies connected to Richard Vale.
Blake did not accuse anyone without proof.
Evelyn agreed to keep their marriage private until he knew whether the leaks were coincidence or theft.
She hated lying to her mother.
But she feared what Richard would do if he learned he had personal access to the one businessman he desperately wanted to impress.
On the morning of Penelope’s wedding, Blake promised to join Evelyn before the ceremony ended.
Then an emergency delayed him.
“I’ll be there,” he told her.
“I can handle my family for one afternoon.”
Blake went quiet.
“That sentence worries me more than the emergency.”
Evelyn laughed.

Hours later, her father’s hand struck her shoulder.
👉 What Evelyn did not know was that Richard had already discovered part of her secret—and believed humiliating her would force the rest into the open.
