Chapter 5 - “Which One of You Pushed My Wife?”

No one answered Blake.

The garden that had been filled with music and laughter became unnaturally still.

Richard’s champagne glass trembled near his chest.

Penelope slowly rose from her chair.

Jonathan Mercer stood beside her, staring at Evelyn’s ring.

Blake tightened the cashmere coat around his wife’s shoulders.

“Are you hurt?”

“My heel is broken.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Evelyn looked at her father.

“My shoulder hurts.”

Blake’s jaw flexed.

He did not shout.

That frightened Richard more.

“I’m sure this is a misunderstanding,” Richard said.

Blake turned toward him.

“Did you touch her?”

Richard forced a laugh.

“Evelyn has always been dramatic. She lost her balance.”

The security aide who had steadied Evelyn stepped forward.

“I saw the shove.”

Richard recognized him then.

Daniel Cross was not a random wedding guest.

He was the former federal investigator who ran Campbell Global’s private security division.

Richard’s face tightened.

Penelope stepped between them.

“This is my wedding.”

Evelyn stared at her.

“You applauded.”

“I was shocked.”

“You laughed.”

Penelope’s eyes flicked toward the phones still raised around the lawn.

Several guests immediately lowered them.

Blake noticed.

“How many people recorded it?”

Nobody spoke.

Blake removed his phone.

Richard took a step forward.

“Now, hold on. We do not need to turn a family disagreement into a public spectacle.”

“You already did.”

Blake’s voice remained calm.

He looked toward Daniel.

“Secure every available angle.”

Richard’s confidence returned slightly.

“You cannot seize private phones.”

“I didn’t say seize.”

Blake looked at the guests.

“I asked who recorded an assault on my wife.”

A young server raised her hand.

Her face was pale.

“I did.”

Then an older woman near the floral arch spoke.

“So did I.”

Another guest nodded.

Within seconds, eight people admitted they had footage.

Penelope looked around in disbelief.

Richard pointed toward Evelyn.

“She provoked me.”

Blake’s eyes darkened.

“Be very careful with your next sentence.”

Margaret finally stood.

Her knees shook.

“Richard pushed her.”

The admission struck harder than the splash.

Richard turned toward his wife.

“What did you say?”

Margaret covered her mouth, horrified by her own courage.

Then she repeated it.

May you like

“I saw you push our daughter.”

👉 Margaret had broken decades of silence—but Richard still possessed a secret capable of destroying her if she testified.
