Chapter 10 - The Photograph in Penelope’s Dressing Room
Lauren Mercer, Jonathan’s younger sister, contacted Evelyn that afternoon.
Unlike most wedding guests, Lauren had not laughed.
She had been inside Penelope’s dressing room when the shouting began.
“I found something you should see,” she said.
Lauren arrived at Blake’s residence carrying a white envelope.
Inside was a photograph taken six months earlier.
Blake stood outside a private restaurant.
Penelope was across the street watching him.
A second photograph showed her entering Campbell Global’s lobby days later.
A third showed her speaking with Blake’s former junior analyst—the employee suspected of leaking information.
Evelyn looked at Blake.
“Did you ever meet her?”
“Not knowingly.”
Lauren explained that she had found the photographs inside Penelope’s locked bridal desk.
Beside them was a handwritten list.
Blake’s travel dates.
Evelyn’s nonprofit events.
Locations where they had both appeared.
Penelope had been tracking them.
“She knew you were together,” Lauren said. “Maybe not married, but she knew.”
Evelyn remembered strange moments from the past six months.
Penelope suddenly asking whether she was dating anyone.
Richard demanding the names of nonprofit donors.
A car following her after late meetings.
Blake’s security team had noticed the vehicle but lost it in traffic.
Daniel compared the license plate from street footage.
The car belonged to a Vale Development subsidiary.
Margaret’s face crumpled.
“They were following you?”
Evelyn held the photographs tightly.
“Why didn’t Penelope confront me?”
Blake answered.
“Because your relationship was more valuable as a secret.”
Penelope likely believed she could expose Evelyn at the right moment, embarrass her, and force Blake into a public meeting with Richard.
But Blake’s secret marriage changed everything.
Penelope had tracked a romance.
She had not discovered the wedding rings.
Lauren handed Evelyn one final item.
A draft speech Penelope never delivered.
It accused Evelyn of sleeping with an unnamed married investor.
Penelope had planned to expose her sister publicly during the reception.
When Evelyn refused to name her companion, Richard escalated the humiliation himself.
The fountain push was not planned.
