Chapter 15 - The Ledger Beneath the Wine Rack

Celia contacted the proper authorities through formal legal channels.

No one entered Richard’s estate secretly.

No one stole evidence.

Instead, the recordings, shell-company records, forged signatures, and Penelope’s statement supported a lawful search of Vale Development’s offices and financial storage.

The ledger was not in the wine cellar.

Richard had moved it.

But dust marks behind one wine rack showed where a metal case had been stored.

Security footage from the estate captured Richard carrying that case to his car hours after the wedding.

He drove to a private marina.

Blake’s team found no footage of what happened there.

Richard returned without the case.

He believed the evidence was gone.

But the ledger had a digital copy.

His accountant had photographed every page to protect himself.

Faced with the preservation order and possible liability, the accountant surrendered the files.

The records connected Richard to bribed inspectors, fraudulent evictions, secret political payments, and the stolen Campbell Global information.

Margaret’s forged signatures appeared on dozens of documents.

So did Penelope’s real signature.

Penelope had knowingly approved several shell-company transfers.

She could not claim complete innocence.

When Evelyn confronted her, Penelope became defensive.

“I signed what Dad told me.”

“So did Mom.”

“I was trying to save the company.”

“You were trying to inherit it.”

Penelope’s face hardened.

“At least I stayed. You walked away and judged us.”

“I walked away because Dad wanted obedience, not a daughter.”

Margaret listened from across the room.

For the first time, she did not intervene.

Penelope looked at her mother.

“Tell her.”

Margaret shook her head.

“No.”

“You always protect her.”

Margaret’s voice trembled but remained firm.

“I protected your father. It nearly destroyed both of you.”

Penelope stared at her.

Then she said the cruelest thing she could find.

“He never loved you.”

Margaret absorbed the words.

Perhaps once, they would have shattered her.

Now she answered quietly.

“That no longer decides what I am worth.”

Penelope left.

Outside, reporters waited.

She covered her face and blamed Evelyn again.

But the public had already seen the fountain.

Every new accusation sounded like another echo of Richard.

👉 The evidence was now strong enough to destroy Richard’s empire, but Evelyn still had not learned why Blake arrived at the wedding at the exact moment she fell.
