Chapter 6 - The Mother Who Looked Away
Margaret Vale had spent thirty-three years protecting her husband’s reputation.
At first, she called it loyalty.
Later, she called it survival.
Richard controlled every account in her name.
He approved every purchase.
He decided which friends remained welcome.
Whenever Margaret challenged him, he reminded her that the house, cars, jewelry, and social standing existed because of him.
“You would have nothing without me.”
She heard that sentence so often that she eventually believed it.
Richard never struck her.
He did not need to.
He punished disagreement through isolation, humiliation, and money.
When Evelyn was younger, Margaret secretly admired her defiance.
She also feared it.
Every time Evelyn confronted Richard, Margaret imagined the entire family collapsing.
So she taught her daughter to endure.
“Don’t provoke him.”
“Let him calm down.”
“Apologize even if you’re right.”
Evelyn stopped coming to her for comfort.
On the wedding lawn, Margaret realized her silence had not preserved the family.
It had trained Richard to believe there were no consequences.
He walked toward her.
“Tell them she slipped.”
Margaret backed away.
Richard lowered his voice.
“You know what happens if you turn against me.”
Evelyn saw her mother’s face change.
“What is he threatening you with?”
“Nothing,” Margaret said too quickly.
Richard smiled.
Blake noticed the exchange.
He moved closer without touching either of them.
“Mrs. Vale, you are free to leave with us.”
Richard laughed.
“She isn’t going anywhere.”
Margaret looked at Evelyn.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
Richard answered for her.
“Because your mother signed documents she has no desire to explain.”
Margaret’s face went white.
Years earlier, Richard had placed tax forms and company papers before her.
She signed wherever he pointed.
Recently, he had warned her that one signature connected her to illegal transfers inside Vale Development.
If investigators looked closely, Margaret could appear responsible.
Richard used those papers to keep her obedient.
Blake studied him.
“What transfers?”
Richard lifted his glass again.
“Private family matters.”
Evelyn stepped toward her mother.
“Did you knowingly do anything illegal?”
“No.”
“Then stop protecting him.”
Margaret began to cry.
Richard’s voice sharpened.
“She will lose everything.”
Evelyn reached for her hand.
