Chapter 11 - The Sister Who Wanted Her Life

Penelope had always wanted whatever Evelyn protected.

As children, she took Evelyn’s journals and read them aloud.

As teenagers, she flirted with anyone Evelyn liked.

When Evelyn left the family company, Penelope mocked her.

When Evelyn found meaningful work, Penelope called it failure.

But Blake represented something Penelope could not tolerate.

He was powerful enough to impress Richard.

Private enough to remain mysterious.

And he loved Evelyn without requiring her to perform.

Penelope first saw them together at a restaurant in Coconut Grove.

Evelyn was laughing.

Blake was looking at her with a softness Penelope had never received from Jonathan.

She followed them outside.

Within weeks, she discovered Blake’s identity.

She told Richard that Evelyn was secretly involved with him.

Richard did not believe Blake Campbell would choose his “difficult” daughter.

He assumed Evelyn was exaggerating a casual encounter.

Penelope became determined to prove otherwise.

She approached the junior analyst leaking information to the Mercers.

She offered money for Blake’s schedule.

She used that schedule to track Evelyn.

Then she sent anonymous messages to Blake implying Evelyn was sharing his secrets with Richard.

Blake investigated the accusation and found no evidence.

He never told Evelyn because he believed the messages were part of the larger corporate leak.

Penelope wanted to damage their trust before the wedding.

When that failed, she planned the public accusation.

Evelyn listened as Daniel reconstructed the digital trail.

Her sadness slowly became anger.

Not wild anger.

Focused anger.

“She didn’t just want to embarrass me,” Evelyn said. “She tried to make Blake believe I betrayed him.”

Margaret cried quietly.

“I raised her.”

“You also raised me,” Evelyn replied. “We choose what we become.”

Blake reached for Evelyn’s hand.

Her wedding ring caught the light.

“Do you want to release everything?”

“Not yet.”

Richard and Penelope still believed the edited online story was working.

Banks had not withdrawn from the Vale-Mercer partnership.

Wedding guests were staying silent.

Evelyn wanted them comfortable.

She wanted every lie documented before the truth arrived.

Then Celia received a call.

Richard had filed an emergency petition claiming Margaret was mentally incompetent.

If granted, he would control her testimony and finances.

👉 Richard could no longer silence Evelyn, so he moved to legally erase Margaret before she could testify.
