Chapter 17 - Richard’s Last Performance

The meeting took place in a conference room with attorneys present.
No private deals.
No hidden conversations.
No opportunity for Richard to rewrite what happened.
He entered wearing the same kind of black suit he had worn to the wedding.
Without the mansion, guests, and champagne, he looked smaller.
Richard refused to acknowledge Blake.
He spoke only to Evelyn.
“You have made your point.”
“My point?”
“The videos. The headlines. Your mother leaving. Penelope’s marriage collapsing.”
“You believe I caused those things?”
“You could have handled this privately.”
“You pushed me in front of two hundred people.”
“You embarrassed me.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“I embarrassed you by not hiding what you did.”
Richard leaned forward.
“I built everything this family has.”
“You built a company using stolen information and forged signatures.”
“I gave you opportunities.”
“You gave me conditions.”
“I paid for your education.”
“And Mom sold her jewelry during your first bankruptcy because you refused to touch your golf membership.”
Richard’s face changed.
He had not known Evelyn remembered.
Margaret sat beside Celia.
She did not lower her eyes.
Richard turned toward her.
“You filled her head with this?”
Margaret answered calmly.
“No. I finally stopped erasing it.”
Richard’s control cracked.
He pointed at Blake.
“This man is using you to destroy me.”
Blake remained silent.
Evelyn answered.
“Blake did not push me.”
“You think he loves you? Men like him do not marry women like you without a reason.”
The old wound behind Richard’s words was clear.
Evelyn was still the daughter he expected to doubt herself.
But she no longer did.
“Women like me?”
“Difficult. Defiant. Always judging.”
Blake finally spoke.
“Those are the reasons I noticed her.”
Richard looked at him.
Blake’s voice remained measured.
“She sees manipulation before powerful men finish disguising it as leadership.”
Silence filled the room.
Richard looked back at Evelyn.
“What do you want?”
She thought of the fountain.
The laughter.
Her mother’s lowered eyes.
Mia losing her job.
Families forced from homes through fraudulent notices.
“The truth on record,” she said. “All of it.”
Richard refused the deal.
He walked out believing he could still fight.

But outside the room, his own accountant was waiting to cooperate.
👉 Richard left determined to protect his name, unaware that Penelope was about to give investigators the final evidence against him.
