Chapter 16 - The Call That Brought Blake Running

Blake had not simply finished his emergency early.

Someone called him.

The caller was the tall security aide who steadied Evelyn after she climbed from the fountain.

Daniel Cross had attended the wedding under another guest’s invitation.

Weeks earlier, Blake’s investigation revealed that confidential Campbell information would be exchanged during the reception.

Daniel entered quietly to identify the source.

He did not expect Evelyn to be targeted.

From across the lawn, he saw Penelope directing guests toward the fountain.

He heard Richard demand the identity of Evelyn’s partner.

He sent Blake one message:

They know she is connected to you. Situation escalating.

Blake left his meeting immediately.

The SUVs were already nearby because Daniel’s team expected to preserve financial evidence, not rescue Evelyn.

During the drive, Blake called her.

Her phone was inside her purse beneath a reception chair.

She never heard it.

Daniel moved closer as Richard raised his voice.

He could have intervened before the shove.

But a group of guests blocked his path.

By the time he reached Evelyn, she was already in the water.

Blake carried guilt over those seconds.

“I should have told you someone might confront you,” he said.

Evelyn sat with him on the terrace.

“You didn’t know my father would push me.”

“I knew he was dangerous in other ways.”

“So did I.”

“I asked you to keep our marriage secret.”

“I agreed.”

“And it left you standing alone.”

Evelyn looked toward the bay.

“I wasn’t alone because you were delayed. I was alone because my family chose cruelty.”

Blake took her hand.

“I don’t want my protection to become another form of control.”

“It hasn’t.”

He kissed her knuckles.

For months, Evelyn had hidden her marriage to protect Blake’s investigation.

Now she understood Blake had hidden the investigation partly to protect her from knowing how deeply Richard was involved.

Both had carried danger alone.

They promised never to repeat that mistake.

Then Celia called.

Richard wanted a private meeting.

He offered to confess to the financial scheme if Evelyn publicly stated the fountain incident was accidental.

Richard still believed her humiliation was negotiable.

👉 Evelyn agreed to meet him—not to bargain, but to finally let her father hear what his power could no longer silence.
