Chapter 4 - The Invitation With a Hidden Purpose

Penelope’s wedding was never meant to repair the family.

It was meant to corner Evelyn.

Three weeks before the ceremony, Richard’s private accountant had discovered that Evelyn’s rent had not been paid from her usual account in months.

Her modest apartment lease had ended.

Her car loan had been cleared.

Her nonprofit had received an anonymous donation large enough to protect three buildings from foreclosure.

Richard became convinced Evelyn had found a wealthy benefactor.

He did not know it was her husband.

He believed she was someone’s secret mistress.

Penelope loved the theory.

“She’ll never admit it,” she said. “Not unless we embarrass her.”

Richard wanted the man’s identity.

If the benefactor was influential, Richard intended to use Evelyn as leverage.

His construction company was drowning under debt hidden behind new loans.

The Mercer wedding was supposed to restore investor confidence.

But Jonathan’s family had begun asking questions.

Richard needed another source of money.

Another powerful relationship.

Another person to manipulate.

So Penelope sent Evelyn an invitation.

Then she arranged for a bridesmaid to damage Evelyn’s heel before the reception.

She assigned Evelyn a chair near the service entrance.

She instructed the staff not to serve her at the family table.

And she placed Richard’s favorite associates around the fountain, knowing he performed his worst cruelty when he had an audience.

Evelyn noticed the hostility as soon as she arrived.

Guests stared at her simple beige suit.

A cousin asked whether she had come alone “again.”

Penelope looked past her toward the driveway.

“No date?”

“He was delayed.”

Penelope smiled.

“Of course he was.”

During the ceremony, Margaret sat beside Richard and twisted her pearl bracelet until her wrist reddened.

She knew something had been planned.

She did not know how far it would go.

At the reception, a waiter handed Evelyn a glass of water, then quickly removed it after Penelope whispered to him.

Another guest stepped on Evelyn’s heel.

The strap snapped.

Laughter followed.

Evelyn remained calm.

That angered Richard more than tears would have.

He approached her beside the fountain and demanded the name of the man supporting her.

Evelyn refused.

Richard’s voice grew louder.

Penelope began recording.

Then Richard asked the question he had been building toward all afternoon.

“How much does he pay you to hide him?”

Evelyn’s face went cold.

“Enough.”

That single word triggered him.

👉 Richard shoved Evelyn into the fountain because she would not surrender Blake’s identity—but the guests had recorded more than he realized.
