Chapter 1 - The Kitchen Humiliation

I carried the heavy chocolate birthday cake inside.
The loud laughter of backyard guests echoed clearly.
My mother Teresa was the host today.
She wore an expensive, elegant blue silk dress.
I stepped into the bright modern kitchen area.
Cold air conditioning hit my warm sweaty face.
My eyes froze on the scene before me.
My wife Amy stood beside the deep sink.
She wore a dirty, stained beige cotton dress.
Her blonde hair was pulled in a messy bun.
Her face was pale with extreme physical fatigue.
She was scrubbing heavy greasy party dishes fast.
She only used her right hand for cleaning.
Her left arm clutched our one-year-old son.
Little Frederick was crying softly against her neck.
His tiny face was flushed red with fever.
Sweat soaked his small white cotton baby outfit.
His chest heaved with heavy raspy breaths.
Amy's eyes were filled with desperate tears.
She looked like she was going to fall.
My mother Teresa stood nearby holding wine glass.
She gestured toward Amy with a cruel laugh.
Several family guests laughed at her words outside.
"She's only good for giving birth and washing dishes!"
Teresa announced loudly into the crowded backyard space.
The wicked words cut straight through my chest.
Pure explosive rage ignited inside my veins instantly.
I am a thirty-four-year-old construction engineer today.
I build massive steel bridges for a living.
I wore my dark blue plaid flannel shirt.
But right now, I felt completely helpless inside.
My mother had controlled our lives for years.
She forced Amy to cook for twenty people.
She refused to let Amy take Frederick doctor.
She claimed Amy was an overly dramatic mother.
She said a little fever builds strong immunity.
Amy had begged me for help earlier today.
But Teresa kept me busy fixing party lights.
Now I saw the horrifying truth before me.
Amy was physically breaking down in front me.
Our baby was burning up with high heat.
And my own mother was mocking her pain.
Teresa took a slow sip of red wine.
She smiled at her wealthy country club friends.
"Look at her, she cannot even manage dishes."
"My son made a huge mistake marrying her."
"She brings zero value to our family legacy."
Amy bowed her head lower over soapy water.
A hot tear fell into dirty dish foam.
She tried to wipe Frederick's sweaty hot forehead.
Her hands shook violently with pure physical exhaustion.
Frederick let out a painful, weak baby cry.
My knuckles turned white against cardboard cake box.
The sweet chocolate smell made me feel sick.
I realized my silence had protected a monster.
I realized I had failed my sweet family.
The backyard guests kept laughing at the joke.
Nobody stepped in to help my suffering wife.
Nobody cared that my baby boy was sick.
Teresa looked at me with a triumphant smile.
She expected me to laugh along with them.
She thought I would take her side again.
She had no idea what was coming next.
My heart hardened into solid, unbreakable steel now.
The cake box slipped from my trembling hands.

It crashed loudly onto the hardwood kitchen floor.
