Chapter 29 - TERESA’S LAST TEST

Elias opened the blast door through the network.

The core chamber burned with emergency red light.

Teresa stood beside a cylindrical server surrounded by rising coolant vapor.

She held the sponsor archive in one hand.

In the other, she held a detonator.

“You should have left,” she said.

“I spent my entire life living inside choices you made for me.”

“And yet every choice brought you here.”

“No. Amy brought me here.”

Her expression hardened at the distinction.

“You still believe love is separate from design.”

“I know it is.”

“How?”

“Because you designed every condition around us and still never understood why she risked her life to warn me.”

Teresa glanced at Elias.

“And you?”

He stood beside me.

“You made me without love,” he said. “That is why I understand its absence.”

Something broke in her face.

Only briefly.

Then she raised the detonator.

“The archive dies with us.”

I connected to the core through the control console.

The system recognized me as Architect.

Teresa pressed the trigger.

Nothing happened.

She pressed it again.

I held up the small wireless relay I had removed from the detonator circuit through the network.

Her lips parted.

“You changed the system.”

“You built it from my work.”

I opened every archive partition.

Files began transmitting to dozens of external destinations Evelyn had prepared.

Teresa rushed toward the server.

Elias blocked her.

She struck him with the detonator, then reached for a fallen guard’s pistol.

I tackled her before she reached it.

We hit the floor.

She clawed at my face.

“You ungrateful child.”

“You never treated me like one.”

“You belong to me.”

“No.”

I pinned her wrists.

“I survived you.”

The archive reached eighty percent.

The ceiling split above us.

A steel support beam crashed between Elias and the exit.

“Connor!” he shouted.

The route back to the trains was blocked.

Teresa saw it and laughed.

“You wanted the truth. Now you can be buried with it.”

Elias accessed a maintenance vent beneath the core.

“There is one passage.”

It was barely wide enough for one person at a time.

I pulled Teresa toward it.

Elias stopped me.

“There is not enough time to move all three.”

The archive reached ninety-two percent.

Teresa looked between us.

“You won’t leave your mother.”

I thought of Daniel.

Of Amy.

Of every child in the laboratory.

“You were never my mother when it mattered.”

I pushed Elias toward the vent.

“Go.”

He resisted.

“You must come first.”

“You know the facility better.”

“I have never been outside.”

“That’s why you’re going.”

The archive reached one hundred percent.

Teresa lunged for the pistol.

A section of ceiling collapsed.

I shoved her aside and dove into the vent behind Elias.

The blast threw us through the narrow tunnel.

Fire chased us through darkness.

We emerged onto the rail line as the last train began moving.

Amy stood on the rear platform, reaching toward me.

Elias jumped first.

I ran beside the train.

Amy stretched farther.

Our hands touched.

Then Teresa appeared behind me through the smoke.

She had survived.

She raised the pistol.

A shot cracked through the tunnel.
