Chapter 8 - The Engineering Audit

The two private security guards stepped forward fast.
I planted my broad frame directly in doorway.
"Touch that door, and I break your hands."
My voice carried a chilling, lethal operational threat.
The security guards hesitated, seeing my large size.
Arthur Vance adjusted his silk tie with annoyance.
"Connor, resisting a court order is a felony."
"You will lose your engineering license by morning."
I let out a cold, sharp laugh of satisfaction.
"You talk about law, Arthur?" I asked.
"Let's talk about Vance Construction Corporation's books."
Arthur Vance's smug expression faltered for a second.
"What are you talking about?" Arthur asked sternly.
I pulled out my satellite work laptop tablet.
I am the chief structural engineer for firm.
I hold master encryption clearance to corporate servers.
Three days ago, I noticed irregular financial lines.
I ran a complete forensic audit on accounts.
I opened the financial audit file on tablet.
I turned the tablet screen toward Arthur Vance.
The screen displayed thirty million dollars in wire.
Wire transfers routed to offshore shell bank accounts.
Accounts registered in Panama under Teresa's name.
And registered under Arthur Vance's private law firm.
"You two embezzled thirty million from state bridges."
I stated, letting my voice carry down hallway.
"You used substandard steel on the interstate bridge."
"The bridge project funded by federal transportation grants."
Arthur Vance's face went completely ghost white now.
The color drained from his cheeks in seconds.
"Where... where did you get those ledger files?"
"I built those digital bridge blueprints, Arthur," I.
"I have every supply invoice saved on cloud."
"Falsifying federal infrastructure documents carries twenty years."
"And using defective steel on public bridges is treason."
Teresa's hands began shaking violently inside coat pockets.
Her legal trap was collapsing under corporate fraud.
"You... you wouldn't report your own mother!"
Teresa stammered out, her voice cracking with fear.

"Try me, Teresa," I answered in cold.
