Chapter 7 - The Custody Trap

A sudden noise echoed down the hospital hallway.

Heavy leather shoes clicked loudly against tile floor.

A man in an expensive gray suit approached.

He carried a thick leather legal document briefcase.

Behind him walked my mother Teresa, wearing coat.

She had posted emergency bail at the precinct.

The man in suit was Arthur Vance, lawyer.

He was the family's high-priced corporate defense attorney.

Arthur Vance wore an arrogant, patronizing smile today.

"Connor, good evening," Arthur spoke with smooth.

"I am here representing your mother Teresa Vance."

I stood up from my hospital chair fast.

My fists clenched tight at my plaid sides.

"Get out of my sight, Vance," I.

Arthur Vance chuckled softly, opening his leather briefcase.

He pulled a signed legal court document out.

"I am afraid you cannot kick me out."

"I have an emergency court order signed today."

"A judge granted temporary legal guardianship of Frederick."

"Guardianship transferred directly to your mother Teresa Vance."

Amy gasped loudly, shrinking back into her chair.

"What?" I roared out, stepping into lawyer's.

"How could a judge grant custody to poisoner?"

Arthur Vance held up a secondary paper document.

"The court reviewed sworn affidavits from family witnesses."

"Ten guests signed statements claiming Amy is addict."

"They swore under oath Amy has severe delusions."

"Therefore, the state ruled Amy is unfit mother."

"Child protective services will surrender the infant to us."

Teresa stepped out from behind her lawyer's back.

She wore a triumphant, wicked smirk on face.

"You thought you were clever with phone, Connor?"

Teresa mocked in a low, poisonous whisper tone.

"Money buys judges, lawyers, and family loyalty here."

"By tomorrow morning, Amy will be in asylum."

"And I will raise my grandson my way."

Amy burst into hysterical sob tears beside me.

"You can't take my baby!" Amy shrieked.

"He is my son! You tried to kill!"

Arthur Vance signaled two private security guards behind.

"Officers, enforce the emergency court custody order now."
