Chapter 6 - Hospital Investigation

Officer Davis looked at the crying, messy woman.

Then he looked at the high-definition video screen.

I held my phone out for Officer Davis.

"Officer, watch this security video from last night."

"It shows my mother tampering with formula container."

Officer Davis watched the video with sharp eyes.

His jaw tightened into a rigid, angry line.

"Mrs. Teresa Vance, do not move an inch."

Officer Davis commanded in a stern, commanding tone.

"Officer Davis, I am a prominent city donor!"

Teresa shrieked, trying to assert her status.

"You cannot take the word of a video!"

"Keep your hands where I can see, ma'am."

Officer Davis took the formula bottle as evidence.

He placed the plastic container into evidence bag.

I stepped into the back ambulance with Amy.

The heavy metal rear doors slammed shut tight.

Sirens wailed loudly as we sped toward hospital.

Inside the medical unit, monitors beeped rapidly fast.

Amy held Frederick's tiny hand in her palm.

IV fluids were injected into his small arm.

"Is he going to live?" Amy asked weeping.

"We are stabilizing his vitals now, ma'am."

The female paramedic reassured us with gentle words.

Twenty minutes later, we arrived at St. Jude.

Trauma doctors wheeled Frederick straight into ER room.

They performed emergency blood tests and stomach pumps.

An hour passed in the dim waiting room.

Doctor Sarah Jenkins walked out holding a chart.

Her expression was grave and extremely serious today.

"Mr. Vance, we found heavy traces Scopolamine."

"Scopolamine?" I asked, my brow furrowing tight.

"It is a dangerous central nervous system depressant."

"In infants, it causes severe respiratory failure fast."

"If you brought him thirty minutes later tonight,"

"Your son would have suffered permanent brain damage."

Pure, freezing horror washed through my entire body.

My mother had nearly murdered my innocent son.

Doctor Jenkins looked at me with firm resolve.

"I have already notified the District Attorney's office."
