Chapter 12 - The Forensic Evidence
Federal agents cordoned off the entire Vance mansion.
Yellow crime scene tape stretched across front gates.
Three black federal SUVs sat idling in driveway.
I walked into the house with Agent Miller.
Amy stayed at hospital watching over baby Frederick.
Frederick was awake now, drinking clean warm milk.
His fever had dropped completely back to normal.
We entered Teresa's private master bedroom office area.
Behind a large oil painting hung a safe.
The heavy steel vault door was sealed tight.
"We need a safe cracker, Agent," trooper reported.
"It will take four hours to drill lock."
I stepped forward, looking at the digital keypad.
As chief engineer, I installed that safe myself.
I remembered the private security override master code.
I typed six numbers onto the keypad buttons.
Zero, nine, two, four, seven, one.
The electronic lock chimed green with soft beep.
The heavy steel vault door swung open slowly.
Inside lay stacks of physical gold bullion bars.
Beside the gold rested a black flash drive.
And a handwritten journal bound in leather cover.
Agent Miller pulled the flash drive out carefully.
He plugged the drive into his encrypted laptop.
A secondary folder opened up on blue screen.
The folder contained full audio recordings of calls.
Calls between Teresa and an unknown mysterious contact.
I pressed the play button icon on screen.
A cold, raspy voice echoed through speakers:
"Is the girl completely subdued yet, Teresa?"
Teresa's recorded voice answered back on tape:
"Yes, she is scrubbing dishes in kitchen now."
"By tomorrow, she will be locked in asylum."
"And the fifty million trust transfers to us."
The raspy voice replied with a chilling laugh:
"Good. Eliminate her husband if he interferes."
My blood ran ice cold inside my veins.
Teresa had planned to murder me as well.
If I tried to protect my wife today.
They were going to orchestrate a car accident.
