Chapter 10 - The Poisoned History

Two days passed at St. Jude Hospital.
Lily was recovering safely in a private room.
Her burn wounds were treated by top specialists.
The doctors confirmed she would suffer zero permanent scars.
Detective Miller walked into the room carrying files.
He set a thick black folder onto table.
"The State Prosecutor processed Kate's private safe."
"We found something that changes the entire case."
I stood up from my chair beside Lily.
"What did you find, Miller?" I asked.
Miller opened the folder, displaying old medical records.
"Your biological mother died three years ago, correct?"
"Yes, she died of a sudden stroke," I.
"That's what the death certificate stated then."
Miller handed me a certified forensic laboratory report.
"We exhumed your mother's body yesterday morning."
"The toxicology report confirmed heavy lethal arsenic poison."
My entire body went completely numb with shock.
My mother didn't die of a natural stroke.
She was systematically poisoned over six long months.
"Kate was working as your mother's private nurse then."
Miller explained, letting every word cut into room.
"She poisoned your mother to trigger the trust."
"Then she targeted you to marry her later."
"She has been hunting your family fortune years."
Pure, freezing horror washed through my entire soul.
Kate was not just a greedy, manipulative stepmother.
She was a cold, calculating, serial family murderer.
She killed my mother three years ago today.
Then she tried to destroy my daughter now.
All for the five-million-dollar inheritance estate trust.
My fists clenched tight until my knuckles turned white.
The sheer monstrous depth of her evil exposed.
"Does the District Attorney have this report?" I.
"Yes," Miller answered with a stern, solemn nod.
"They added first-degree capital murder charges today."
"Kate Harper faces mandatory life without parole."
"Or the state capital death penalty sentence."
Sarah held my hand tightly, tears in eyes.
"She will never leave a prison cell alive."
I looked at my sweet daughter fast asleep.
The nightmare that haunted our family was ending.
