Chapter 9 - The Net Snaps Shut
Four State Police vehicles screeched to a halt.
Eight armed troopers stepped out with weapons drawn.
"State Police! Drop your weapons immediately!" trooper.
Officer Davis froze, his rifle trembling in hands.
He realized his career and life were over.
He slowly dropped his rifle onto asphalt floor.
He raised his hands into the cold night air.
"I surrender! It was all her idea!" Davis.
"She promised me two million dollars cash!"
Kate turned on her police partner with rage.
"You spineless coward!" Kate roared hysterically at.
She pressed the red button on remote detonator.
Nothing happened on the distant suburban neighborhood street.
Investigator Miller smiled coldly, stepping closer to her.
"We disarmed your bomb two hours ago, Kate."
"State Police bomb squad cleared the basement house."
Kate stared at the dead remote in shock.
Her final leverage was rendered completely useless today.
State troopers rushed forward, tackling her to ground.
Her expensive beige trench coat gathered black oil.
Cold steel handcuffs clicked tightly around her wrists.
Kate thrashed and screamed profanities on the tarmac.
"Get your hands off me, you peasants!"
"I am Kate Harper! That money is mine!"
A female trooper forced her arms behind back.
"You are under arrest for attempted capital murder."
"You are also charged with child abuse and arson."
I ran straight to Lily's rolling hospital stretcher.
I dropped onto my knees, holding her hand.
Sarah wrapped her arms around both of us.
Tears of pure, overwhelming relief flooded my eyes.
"You are safe now, baby girl," I.
"Nobody can ever hurt you ever again today."
Lily's tiny hand squeezed my fingers softly back.
"I told them you didn't do it, Daddy."
"I know you did, my brave little girl."
Paramedics wheeled Lily carefully into a safe ambulance.
This time, Sarah and I climbed inside together.
Kate was dragged into the back police cruiser.
Her weeping, hysterical screams faded into dark night.
Justice was finally coming for the evil woman.
