Chapter 14 - Real-Time Threat

The live satellite video feed showed our house.
It showed Sarah and me sitting on porch.
The camera zoomed in on my laptop screen.
Whoever sent the drive was watching us right now.
My heart pounded violently against my chest ribs.
I grabbed Sarah's hand, pulling her up.
"Get inside the house right now, Sarah!"
We ran inside, locking the heavy front door.
I activated our new home security alarm system.
Thick steel shutters lowered over every window frame.
I pulled my licensed firearm from the safe.
I ran upstairs to check on little Lily.
Lily was sleeping peacefully in her wooden bed.
I stood by her bedroom door on guard.
My mind raced through the terrifying implications.
My father was a high-level corporate syndicate leader.
He had spent twenty years building a shadow empire.
He used Kate to test my tactical instincts.
He wanted me to inherit his global network.
And if I refused his dark offer today,
He would eliminate everything I loved in world.
I pulled out my mobile phone to call.
I dialed Investigator Miller's private cell number.
"Miller, my father is alive," I whispered.
"He sent me a live satellite video feed."
Miller's voice returned sharp, urgent, and heavy:
"Daniel, I just checked national security files."
"Your father's name was flagged ten minutes ago."
"He just crossed the state line toward city."
"He is coming to your house tonight."
I took a deep breath, holding gun tight.
I had fought Kate and won in court.
I had saved my daughter from scalding water.
Now I had to face the ultimate monster.

The man who gave me life twenty years.
A floorboard creaked softly on the porch outside.
