Chapter 7 - Race to the Airstrip

We scrambled down the attic ladder fast today.

We ran out the garage door into night.

Miller slammed his foot onto the van accelerator.

Tires screeched loudly as we burst onto street.

"Which airfield are they taking her to, Daniel?"

"County Regional Airport, hangar four!" I answered.

"It's the only private transport strip nearby."

Sarah sat in the passenger seat trembling wildly.

She held her mobile phone, dialing hospital desk.

"This is Lily Harper's biological mother!" Sarah.

"Cancel the medical transfer immediately! It's illegal!"

The female nurse's panicked voice answered on speaker:

"I tried to stop them, Mrs. Harper!"

"Officer Davis produced a federal ward warrant!"

"They loaded Lily into an ambulance ten minutes ago!"

"They are heading to the airport right now!"

I grabbed the dashboard handle, my teeth grinding.

Kate knew the video evidence might exist somewhere.

She was fleeing the state with my daughter.

Once Lily was inside a private medical clinic,

Kate could keep her drugged and isolated forever.

She could force the trust payout without interference.

"Miller, can this van go any faster?"

Miller flipped a toggle switch on dashboard panel.

An emergency siren began blaring on roof top.

Strobe lights flashed red and blue through dark.

The black van accelerated past ninety miles hour.

We wove through late-night highway traffic fast today.

In the distance, airport runway lights appeared ahead.

A twin-engine private medical plane sat idling asphalt.

An ambulance was backed up to open plane.

Two paramedics were lifting Lily's rolling stretcher up.

Kate stood near the boarding stairs in coat.

Officer Davis stood beside her holding a rifle.

"There they are!" Sarah screamed, pointing out window.

Miller slammed the van brakes, skidding across asphalt.

We blocked the entrance to the aircraft stairs.

I kicked the van side door wide open.

I stepped out onto the windy runway pavement.

"Get away from my daughter, Kate!" I.

Kate turned her head sharply, eyes bulging wide.

Officer Davis raised his rifle, aiming at chest.
