Chapter 11 - The Courtroom Fall

Six months passed quickly in the city court.
The grand capital murder trial convened on Monday.
National news cameras packed the marble courthouse plaza.
Reporters broadcasted the trial live across entire nation.
The headline scrolled across millions of television screens:
"Stepmother On Trial For Child Scalding And Poisoning."
Kate sat at defense table wearing orange jumpsuit.
Her expensive hair was gray, messy, and unkempt.
Officer Davis sat beside her in iron chains.
His badge was revoked, his career destroyed forever.
Kate's defense attorney tried to claim temporary insanity.
"My client suffered from severe postpartum psychiatric psychosis!"
The defense lawyer shouted to the listening jury.
I took the witness stand wearing a dark suit.
I presented the hidden attic micro-server video files.
I submitted the boiler override photos and screwdriver.
Doctor Sarah Jenkins testified about the chemical lye burns.
She proved Kate deliberately increased the water heat.
The forensic pathologist testified about my mother's poisoning.
He presented the arsenic levels found in tissue.
The jury listened in absolute, horrified, dead silence.
They reviewed the video of Kate smirking outside.
After only fifteen short minutes of private deliberation,
The jury returned to the courtroom with verdict.
The jury foreman stood up holding paper document.
"On count one, capital murder, we find guilty."
"On count two, attempted murder of child, guilty."
"On count three, felony child endangerment, guilty."
Kate let out a loud, blood-curdling shriek.
She collapsed onto the defense table sobbing hysterically.
Judge Harrison slammed his wooden gavel down hard.
"Kate Harper, you are sentenced to life."
"Life without possibility of parole in maximum security."
"Guards, remove the prisoner from my courtroom!"
Two armed bailiffs dragged Kate out side doors.
Her weeping cries faded down the marble hallway.
Justice was finally delivered to the evil woman.
