Chapter 13 - The Mysterious Package
I opened the cardboard box flaps on table.
Inside lay a sleek silver encrypted flash drive.
Beside the flash drive rested a single photograph.
I picked up the photo with trembling fingers.
The image showed an old medical laboratory building.
A facility located deep inside remote mountain woods.
Standing in front of the building was a man.
A man wearing an expensive dark tailored suit.
He held a newborn baby in his arms.
My blood ran completely ice cold in seconds.
The man in the photo was my father.
The father I believed died twenty years ago.
My father hadn't died of illness back then.
He was alive and standing outside the facility.
I flipped the photograph over to read back.
A message was written in neat, handwritten text:
"Hello, my son Daniel."
"Kate was only executing my instructions all along."
"I created the trust fund to test you."
"You passed the test, my brilliant boy."
"Now it is time for you to take over."
"I am waiting for you at the mountain."
Pure, paralyzing, freezing terror flooded my entire body.
My father was the ultimate mastermind behind Kate.
He had orchestrated my mother's death years ago.
He had instructed Kate to target my daughter.
The entire five-million-dollar trust was a trap.
A trap designed to test my engineering mind.
Sarah looked at my pale face with concern.
"Daniel, what is in that photograph?"
"My father... he's still alive, Sarah," I.
"And he was the one behind Kate."
Sarah gasped, dropping her glass onto floor.
The glass shattered into tiny pieces on deck.
"How could he do this to his own family?"
I plugged the flash drive into my laptop.
A single video file opened on the screen.
The video displayed a live satellite camera feed.
