Chapter 15 - The Final Shadow

The floorboard creaked again right outside front door.
Slow, heavy, deliberate footsteps approached the entrance.
Sarah pressed her back against the hallway wall.
She held a heavy brass lamp in hand.
Tears of pure terror streamed down her cheeks.
"Daniel... someone is at the door..." she.
I stepped in front of Sarah and Lily.
I raised my firearm, aiming at the lock.
My finger rested steady on the steel trigger.
The heavy brass door handle slowly turned downward.
The electronic deadbolt lock chimed with a soft.
The keycard reader flashed green on the frame.
Whoever was outside held a master digital keycard.
The heavy oak front door swung open slowly.
A tall man stepped into the dimly lit.
He wore an immaculate, expensive dark tailored suit.
His hair was silver, his eyes granite cold.
His face was identical to mine in mirror.
It was my father, standing right before me.
He did not pull a weapon or run.
He looked at my raised firearm and smiled.
A warm, chilling, terrifying smile of pure pride.
"Lower the gun, Daniel," my father whispered.
His voice sounded identical to my own voice.
"You did well defeating Kate at the hospital."
"She was weak and reckless with that water."
"I taught you to be strong, my son."
I did not lower the barrel an inch.
"You poisoned my mother, you sick monster!"
My father took a slow step into living room.
"Your mother was going to give away wealth."
"I saved our family empire for you, Daniel."
"And now, the real work begins tonight."
He reached into his inner suit jacket pocket.
I tightened my grip on the trigger guard.
He pulled out a heavy black leather file.
He set the file onto our glass table.
"Inside this folder is the real blueprint," he.
"Kate was just a minor pawn on board."
"Your ex-wife Sarah knows who I am."
I frowned, my eyes darting toward Sarah fast.
Sarah stood frozen in the hallway shadow area.
She slowly lowered the brass lamp to floor.
She walked over to my father's side.
She looked at me with a cold smile.
The exact same smile Kate wore at hospital.
My blood ran completely ice cold in seconds.

"Hello, Daniel," Sarah whispered in a voice.
"I created the trust fund twenty years ago."
