Chapter 8 - The Tarmac Standoff
The cold night wind whipped across open runway.
Engine jet blast hummed loudly in background space.
Officer Davis held his rifle locked on chest.
His hands were shaking slightly on the grip.
"You are a fleeing felon, Daniel!" Davis.
"I have full legal authorization to use force!"
I did not back down a single inch today.
I took two slow, deliberate steps forward tarmac.
"Lower the weapon, Davis," Investigator Miller called out.
Miller stepped out of the van holding laptop.
"We have the attic backup server files, Officer."
"We have video of Kate locking Lily inside."
"And we have audio of you wiping fingerprints."
Officer Davis's face lost all its healthy color.
Sweat broke out across his forehead skin fast.
"What... what backup server?" Davis stammered out.
Kate's calm, arrogant composure shattered in one second.
She grabbed Davis's arm violently, shrieking out loud:
"He's bluffing, Davis! Shoot him right now!"
"Shoot him and say he attacked the ambulance!"
Sarah ran past me toward the rolling stretcher.
"Lily! Baby, I'm here!" Sarah cried out.
Lily opened her hazel eyes, weeping through mask.
"Mommy! Daddy!" Lily called out weakly today.
The two private paramedics backed away from stretcher.
They realized they were caught in criminal kidnapping.
"We were told this was legal ward transfer!"
The lead paramedic shouted, raising his hands high.
"We are not involved in this illegal transport!"
Kate reached into her coat pocket frantically now.
She pulled out a small black remote detonator.
"Stay back!" Kate screamed with unhinged, wild madness.
"I placed an explosive charge in your house!"
"If you don't let this plane take off,"
"I will blow your entire neighborhood to pieces!"
My blood ran cold at her horrific threat.
She was completely insane, cornered, and desperate now.
She was willing to destroy lives to escape.
Investigator Miller raised his hand, pointing behind her.
"Look behind you, Kate," Miller stated coldly.
Four black State Police cruisers rounded the hangar.
