Claire felt the first true contraction beside the floral arch.
She gripped her father’s arm.
Robert saw her expression change immediately.
“We’re leaving.”
Claire wanted to stay until Michael was questioned.
Her father refused.
“You have done enough.”
Vanessa helped Claire walk toward the aisle.
It was a strange image.
The abandoned bride supporting the pregnant wife.
Guests moved their chairs aside.
Michael watched from near the altar while investigators spoke to him.
He called Claire’s name.
She did not turn around.
At the hospital, doctors confirmed labor had begun.
Stress had accelerated it.
Robert remained beside her.
Hours later, Claire delivered a healthy baby boy.
She named him Ethan.
