Chapter 6 - The Sealed Envelope

The envelope contained only copies.
The originals were safe with Claire’s attorney.
Inside were photographs of Michael entering the apartment with Vanessa.
Copies of wedding deposits paid from Claire’s joint account.
A certified copy of Claire and Michael’s marriage certificate.
A letter from a bank investigator confirming that several transfers were under review.
And one document Michael feared more than all the others.
A preliminary report linking him to a second account opened using Claire’s identity.
Someone had created the account six months earlier.
The signature resembled Claire’s.
The email address was not hers.
More than thirty-eight thousand dollars had passed through it.
Claire had learned about the account only hours before arriving at the wedding.
Her father’s attorney had already contacted the bank.
The envelope did not contain the final proof.
It contained enough to make Michael wonder how much Claire knew.
That uncertainty was deliberate.

Claire did not come to the wedding to scream.
She came to make him reveal himself.
