Chapter 24 - Vanessa’s Truth
Vanessa visited Claire three weeks later.
She brought no flowers.
She brought a file.
Inside were every message Michael had sent during their relationship.
Claire hesitated before reading them.
Vanessa said:
“You may need them.”
The messages showed how carefully Michael built the lie.
He claimed Claire abandoned him.
He said she lived in another state.
He described himself as emotionally abused.
He used real events but reversed the roles.
A disagreement about money became Claire controlling him.
Her pregnancy illness became proof that she ignored his needs.
Her caution about debt became selfishness.
Vanessa had not merely been told Michael was single.
She had been taught to distrust a woman she had never met.
Claire closed the file.
“He made us characters in a story that protected him.”
