Chapter 1 - THE KEY UNDER MY SHOE

Vanessa had my fourteen-month-old daughter by the hair when I came through the front door.

Maya was on her knees beside the sofa, crying so hard she could barely breathe, while Vanessa dragged her across the polished floor as if my child weighed nothing.

"PLEASE! STOP! IT HURTS!"

My briefcase hit the floor.

Before I could move, Ethan came tearing down from the stairs.

My eight-year-old son grabbed Vanessa's wrist with both hands and pulled until her fingers came free from Maya's hair.

"DON'T TOUCH MY SISTER!"

Maya scrambled behind him and buried both fists in the back of his blue shirt.

Vanessa's face changed.

She slapped him.

Hard.

The sound cracked through the room.

Ethan staggered sideways, his cheek already turning red, but he planted his sneakers again and spread both arms in front of Maya.

"GET OUT OF THE WAY!" Vanessa screamed.

She reached around him.

I slammed the front door open hard enough to strike the wall.

Vanessa froze.

I saw Ethan's cheek.

I saw Maya trembling behind him.

And I saw my wife standing over both of them with one hand still stretched toward my daughter.

Something inside me went frighteningly cold.

I crossed the room.

"What the hell have you done?"

Vanessa stepped backward.

"Arthur, this isn't what—"

I put one hand on Ethan's shoulder and moved between her and the children.

Maya broke from behind her brother and ran toward me on unsteady little legs.

That was when something fell from her pale pink dress.

Clink.

A small brass key landed between Vanessa and me.

Vanessa looked down.

Every bit of color disappeared from her face.

Then she lunged.

Not toward Maya.

Toward the key.

I moved first and planted my shoe over it.

Vanessa stopped inches from my loafer.

For three seconds neither of us spoke.

"Why do you want this?" I asked.

"I don't."

"You just dove for it."

Maya wrapped herself around my leg.

Vanessa slowly stood.

"It's one of the old cabinet keys. Maya must've picked it up somewhere."

I looked toward the built-in cabinets.

Every lock there was chrome.

Not brass.

Ethan touched my sleeve.

"Dad."

His voice shook.

"She was looking for it before she started hurting Maya."

Vanessa snapped her head toward him. "That's a lie."

Ethan flinched.

That flinch told me more than his words did.

I bent without lifting my shoe, picked up the key, and slipped it into my pocket.

Vanessa watched the entire movement.

"What does it open?"

"I told you. Nothing important."

"Then you won't mind if I keep it."

Her jaw tightened.

Maya began crying again when Vanessa shifted toward us.

I lifted my daughter.

"You're not going near either child tonight."

Vanessa stared at me, then at the pocket holding the key.

"You have no idea what you're doing."

It wasn't a denial.

It sounded like a warning.

Then Ethan whispered something that made my hand tighten around Maya.

"I know where she found it."

Vanessa's eyes widened.

Ethan pointed upstairs.

"In Mom's old room."

My late wife's room had been locked for sixteen months.

And Vanessa was the only person in the house who had insisted it stay that way.

📖 Ethan led me upstairs expecting Vanessa to follow, but what we found outside my late wife's locked room changed the question from abuse to something far darker. 👇
