Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO COPIED OLIVIA

Only three people had regular access to Olivia's private correspondence.
Me.
Olivia's assistant, Grace Miller.
And Charles Welles.
Grace had worked for Olivia for four years before the crash.
Afterward, she moved to Seattle.
I called her.
She answered cautiously.
When I mentioned the forged memo, she started crying.
"I knew this day would come."
Grace admitted Vanessa had contacted her six months after Olivia's death.
Vanessa claimed she was helping my father organize estate papers and needed examples of Olivia's writing style and old digital files.
Grace sent them.
Dozens.
Emails.
Drafts.
Signed letters.
Personal notes.
"Why didn't you ask me?"
"Your father confirmed it."
Again, my father's attempt to manage problems privately had armed the people causing them.
Grace forwarded the old email chain.
Robert Carter had written:
Please provide Ms. Hale whatever archived materials she reasonably needs for reconciliation of Olivia's outstanding files.
Ms. Hale.
Vanessa.
That email was dated four months before Vanessa and I supposedly met.
I stared at the screen.
The lie was no longer abstract.
Vanessa had known my father.
She had known Olivia.
She had access to my family's internal files.
Then she had entered my life pretending to be a stranger.
Grace gave us one more fact.
Olivia had become suspicious after discovering Vanessa had copied not only company materials but personal documents.
Marriage certificates.
Insurance policies.
Birth certificates.
Ethan's school forms.
My signature samples.
"She told me Vanessa was building a version of your life on paper," Grace said.
That phrase stayed with me.
A version of my life.
Vanessa didn't need to forge everything perfectly.
She needed enough genuine material mixed with lies to create doubt.
Detective Reed obtained the original metadata for the fake Olivia memo.
It had been assembled from scanned fragments months after Olivia's death.
Forgery confirmed.
Major payoff.
But the victory came with a new wound.
Grace had one archived voicemail from Olivia.
She sent it to me.
Olivia said:
"Grace, if Arthur ever asks when I first met Vanessa Hale, tell him the truth. It was at Robert's Christmas reception in 2022. Vanessa already knew who Arthur was."
Two years before Vanessa introduced herself to me.
I thought back to the charity gala.
Her surprised smile.
Her hand in mine.
"Vanessa Carter," she had later joked after our wedding. "I guess fate likes my new name."
It had never been fate.
She had studied me.
Then Ethan entered my study carrying Maya.
"Dad?"
He looked frightened.
"Someone's at the back door."
It was not Vanessa.
It was my father-in-law, Olivia's father, Thomas Bennett.
