Chapter 4 - MY BROTHER'S KEY

Nathan didn't deny using the spare.

He stood in my driveway at 6:07 p.m., loosened his tie, and said, "Vanessa called me."

My younger brother had been CFO of Carter Development for six years.

He was also Ethan's godfather.

I stared at him.

"You entered my house?"

"She said you were spiraling."

"And you believed her?"

"She said you found Olivia's old papers and were accusing her of things that didn't make sense."

I held out my hand.

"The receipt."

Nathan's gaze dropped.

"Give it back."

"I don't have it."

The anger hit so fast I had to stop myself from stepping closer.

"You took it."

"Yes. I gave it to Vanessa."

Ethan was watching through the living-room window.

I lowered my voice.

"Why?"

Nathan rubbed his jaw.

"Because she said it was hers."

"It had Olivia's name on it."

"I didn't read it closely."

Nathan was a man who reviewed eight-figure construction agreements line by line.

He read everything closely.

"You knew about Box 417."

"No."

"Then why help her?"

His silence lasted too long.

I asked again.

"What are you hiding?"

He looked toward the house.

"Arthur, some things about Olivia's last year weren't what you think."

I felt cold.

"Explain."

"I can't."

"Can't or won't?"

"Both."

He finally met my eyes.

"Go to the bank tomorrow. Open the box. Then call me before you call anybody else."

That wasn't reassurance.

It was fear.

"For whose sake?"

"Yours."

I laughed once.

"You entered my home, stole a document connected to my dead wife, handed it to the woman who assaulted my children, and you're telling me you did it for me?"

Nathan's shoulders sagged.

"Vanessa wasn't supposed to hurt them."

The sentence stopped me.

"Supposed to?"

He realized what he had said.

I stepped closer.

"What exactly was she supposed to do?"

He backed toward his car.

"I need to go."

I grabbed his door before he could close it.

"One more thing. Did you know she was searching Olivia's room?"

"No."

"Did you know she tried to access the box?"

His face answered before his mouth did.

"Nathan."

"She said there were documents in there that could destroy the company."

There it was.

The first real reward.

Box 417 wasn't merely about my marriage.

It was connected to Carter Development.

Nathan pulled the door shut.

Before leaving, he lowered the window.

"If Olivia put what I think she put in that box, don't open it with Vanessa anywhere near you."

He drove away.

I returned inside and called the bank.

I told them to place an immediate security note on Box 417.

The manager confirmed nobody could access it without me.

Then he added something I had not expected.

"Mr. Carter, there is another matter. Mrs. Olivia Carter left sealed instructions requiring two witnesses to be present when the box is first opened after her death."

"What witnesses?"

"One was named."

"Who?"

The manager read the name.

Nathan Carter.

My brother hadn't been warning me about the contents.

He already knew Olivia had chosen him to witness them.

📖 The next morning Nathan sat beside me inside the bank vault, and the first item Olivia had left proved Vanessa's secret began before our marriage. 👇
